Brandon Figueroa recently shared exciting news on his Instagram, posting a video of himself shadowboxing and a nostalgic photo from his childhood, along with the caption, “I’m a 3X champion now.” This announcement comes as Figueroa (25-1-1, 19 KOs) was officially elevated to WBC featherweight champion after the reigning titleholder, Rey Vargas, was declared “champion-in-recess” due to a shoulder injury that required surgery.
Originally, Figueroa was scheduled to face Vargas for the title, but with Vargas sidelined, Figueroa has now been added to the Gervonta Davis-Lamont Roach pay-per-view card on December 14 in Houston, where he will take on Stephen Fulton in a highly anticipated rematch. Their first bout in 2021 saw Fulton (22-1, 8 KOs) defeat Figueroa by majority decision to become the unified WBO and WBC super bantamweight champion.
Since that loss, Figueroa has been on a tear, going 3-0. He claimed the WBC interim featherweight title with a unanimous decision victory over Mark Magsayo in March 2023, and defended it by knocking out former champion Jessie Magdaleno in May. With Figueroa’s promotion to full champion status, the stage is now set for him to face Fulton once again, as Fulton is coming off a less-than-stellar performance in September, where he narrowly escaped with a split-decision win against Carlos Castro on the Alvarez-Berlanga undercard.
The rematch between Figueroa and Fulton promises to be an electrifying bout, as Figueroa aims to avenge his previous loss and solidify his standing as a three-time champion.
